Harlow's Under the Sea Birthday Party

Harlow is a summer girl through and through and with her love of summer comes her love of mermaids. I was so happy when she told me she wanted a mermaid party -- because who didn't love the Little Mermaid growing up? I know she was my favorite! I started planning her big day in July -- planning the decor (on a budget), thinking about the menu, and beginning a few DIYs. I can't imagine if money wasn't an issue. I would be THAT mom who would go CRAZY on the decor and menu. Butttt, this family rolls on a budget, so instead of buying a lot of decor on Etsy or Amazon, I DIY'd a lot of it. And because I do it myself, I start early. I am not a procrastinator and the thought of rushing to make the decor last minute stresses me out! So here are some fun details from her party.

-I spent most of the budget on balloons ($30) and food of course
-The mermaid tail banner was a DIY and made from cardstock (under $2)
-I found the table runner on Amazon for under $10
-Mermaid stickers for labeling food and goody bags
-Mermaid plates and shell napkins from Meri Meri Party Supplies

I love adding fun candy and kids always love that. Gummy sharks and rock candy ("coral") were fun additions to the Under the Sea theme.

The menu had to reflect the theme. So I made chicken salad sandwiches and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches in the shape of stars, Annie's white shell pasta to act as sea shells, spinach and artichoke dip as "seaweed dip",  bowl of fruit, and an under the sea punch which was a mix of blue hawaiian punch, sprite, and lemonade.

The cake and cupcakes were made with a simple funfetti box cake mix with homemade buttercream frosting. I added sugar cones to each cupcake and topped them with a DIY mermaid tail that was attached to a toothpick. For her special cupcake I added a '3' sparkler candle and a mermaid tail.

And my favorite addition to her party was this photo area. This was my first time making a balloon arch and obviously there's room for improvement but I'm really happy with how it turned out!

For the backdrop:
-One pack of clear balloons, one pack of lavender, and two packs (two different sizes) of robin blue balloons from Party City
-DIY 'Under the Sea' banner using purple glitter cardstock (two sheets for $4)
-White tablecloths from the dollar store (I used two $2)

And you can't leave a party without a goody bag. I filled them with glow sticks, party poppers, party blowers, Ariel and Finding Dory tattoos, and a pack of goldfish crackers.

A few more fun pictures...

This picture is SO SWEET. Meredith was so excited to wear her mermaid costume because she knew Harlow would LOVE it. And she did!! When she walked in wearing it Harlow had the biggest smile on her face. It was adorable.

Harlow and her guests.

Auntie Alison and Uncle Stephen came up from Charlotte.

Daniels family came from Richmond.

And the Crockett's came from Fredericksburg.

As I was finishing decorating, Harlow looked at me and said "Mom, I'm having so much fun at my party!" and the party hadn't even started yet, haha! So needless to say, it was a success! Tomorrow is her actual birthday and she'll wake up to her big girl bed! Oh, and she's requested cheese dip for dinner. So looks like we'll be going to our favorite Mexican restaurant!
